Saturday 9th March 2019

11:30 13:30

Stevenage Labour Party Women’s Forum will be holding its International Women’s Day celebration on  Saturday 9th March 2019 between 11:30-13:30.  As many of you will be aware, every year the Forum has gathered at Lady Constance Lytton’s tomb which is in the grounds of Knebworth Park.  We do this in recognition of her activism as a suffragette who in the early 20th century fought for the rights of women to vote.  Under a hidden guise she masqueraded as an ordinary woman and ended up incarcerated in prison and force fed, as many were. She went on to become an influential activist, writer, speaker and campaigner for prison reform.

We plan to assemble at Lady Constance Lytton’s tomb in Knebworth Park at 11:30 – about 50 yards from St Mary’s Church, SG3 6PY for a short ceremony and presentation of flowers.  I am pleased to confirm Martha Lytton Cobbold will also be joining us for the refreshments which will follow at The Hideout Centre, 2-6 The Hyde, Stevenage, Herts SG2 9SE. (The Phoenix Group for Deaf Children building).

Parking is available at St Mary’s church which can be accessed through the Old Knebworth Lane entrance to Knebworth Park.  Parking is also available at the Hyde shopping Centre.  If you can offer car sharing do let me know.

We are always keen to reach as many women as we can to promote the importance of using the vote so we would like to encourage you to bring along a guest young or mature to join us. They do not need to be a member of the Labour Party and would be very welcome.

In order to gauge for refreshments, please contact me asap at michellegardner@live.co.uk  or 01438 729010.  (We will need to charge a nominal fee of £2.50 to cover costs) All donations for the raffle are welcome.

We advise that you wear suitable footwear (e.g. wellington boots) for the ceremony with a change of footwear for the refreshments venue.

We look forward to seeing you.

Best Wishes
