A joint statement from Cllr Sharon Taylor, Cllr Jim Brown and Cllr Loraine Rossati:

There has been much mis-information and clouding of issues in relation to parking in the High Street.

Stevenage Borough Council has absolutely no intention of removing free parking from the High Street.

The Council sent a submission to the County Council to express interest in being part of the Sustainable Travel Town scheme.  The County Council have yet to determine which areas will be included in the Sustainable Travel Towns programme and at present they have not allocated any money to support the programme. So Stevenage has neither adopted the programme nor received any funding associated with it.

Neither have we committed to removing free parking in the High Street. On the contrary: we have argued strongly with the County Council, whose policy does include removal of free parking, that this would be entirely the wrong thing to do for our High Street.

In October, we will be carrying out a widespread engagement exercise with businesses and residents of the High Street and with residents of the town to form an Area Action Plan which will map out the future for our High Street. It will be important that this plan gets the balance right between supporting the economy, protecting the heritage of the High Street and ensuring the area is sustainable, so doing all we can to promote cycling, walking and public transport.  We are keen to get as many people, groups, organisations and businesses involved in that process as possible.
