Today (Friday 1st), the government has failed to bring urgent plans to tackle the climate and environment emergency in time to meet the six month deadline set by parliament.
The climate and emergency motion, passed by parliament on the 1 May 2019, “calls on the Government to lay before the House within the next six months urgent proposals to restore the UK’s natural environment and to deliver a circular, zero waste economy.”
Since parliament’s declaration of a climate and environment emergency the Conservative government has failed to pursue policies adequate to the scale of the crisis.
Sue Hayman MP, Shadow Environment Secretary said:
“By ignoring the climate and environment emergency, Boris Johnson has shown that he cannot be trusted to save our planet.
“This election is our last chance to stop the climate and environment emergency.
“The next Labour government will usher in a Green Industrial Revolution to tackle climate change. Labour has a radical, credible plan for tackling the climate crisis and creating a million good, unionised green jobs across the country.”
Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate in Stevenage, Jill Borcherds said:
“Not only has Boris Johnson failed us on the environment, so has our local Tory MP. With a damning record on environmentalism, Mr McPartland is complicit in the damage being done to the climate. We need rapid action now to hit net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 – a Green New Deal that prioritises renewable energy production, quality and affordable public transport, and delivers thousands of well-paid green jobs to Stevenage.
If elected, I will campaign for:
- Rapid expansion in cheaper bus provision including Free Bus Passes for Under-25s;
- Public ownership of the railways, lowering travel costs for commuters and getting trains back on schedule;
- Investment in renewables so that Stevenage homes and businesses run on clean energy;
- A green investment bank to support the decarbonisation plans of Stevenage organisations.
“In government, Labour will end the decade-long Tory squeeze on climate-change research and fight for a sustainable future.
While the Tories have employed a Fracking lobbyist to draft their general election campaign plans, Labour’s people powered movement is treating the climate emergency with the urgency it needs and deserves. In this election it is absolutely clear; we cannot trust the Tories to tackle Climate Change.”
