Labour and Coop Candidate for Herts County Council (St Nicholas Division)
Hello, I am Sandra Barr, and I’m a Borough Councillor for the St Nicholas ward of Stevenage Borough Council and I’m the Labour party candidate for the St Nicholas division of Hertfordshire County Council.
I was born into a socialist family in London, moving to Royston as a child, which enabled my family to get decent housing, schooling and healthcare.
I joined the Labour Party in 1982, and have served as a school governor for 37 years, at 6 different schools, 36 of these years as chair of Governors of Larwood School for children with emotional, behavioural and mental health difficulties.
I moved to St Nicholas as a young wife and mother back in the days when the estate was new and shiny. I’ve watched it grow and thrive through the years under a Labour council. I have always defended the ward against unfair criticism, as being the sum of its parts. It is full of genuinely kind, salt of the earth residents and this is why I’ve chosen to stay here for 50 years.
I genuinely care about our residents, who look out for each other. However, over the last 11 years I have seen its deteriorating infrastructure, which I believe is a consequence of cruel and harsh Tory social engineering. I’ve seen how the roads, footpaths , schools and social services have all diminished under the weight of Tory cutbacks at County Hall.
In my time as borough councillor I’ve made it my job to reach out to my constituents, ensuring they know who their councillors are and that I can easily be approached to represent everyone fairly.
I’m actively involved with the work of the St Nicholas Community centre and association and I work closely with councillors and partners to deliver community and environmental projects, e.g. the environmental works at the St Nicholas shops, the development of the ABC Park and I lead the organisation of St Nicholas Day.
I would do this for residents across the county division of St Nicholas, engaging with all of the voters and residents. I have a 100% attendance record at SBC and I serve on more committees than any other councillor.
I hope that my work on behalf of St. Nicholas and my experience will assure you that I am dedicated to serving our community.
