Following yesterday’s mass ministerial walk-out of the Tory Cabinet over the Prime Minister’s plans to exit the European Union, Theresa May, has been left stranded in office, and is now leading the country towards further chaos. With the combination of her stubborn nature and the seeming lack of any parliamentary majority for her Brexit deal to get through the House of Commons, we must be left to conclude that perhaps her tenure has hit its limit. Whilst she has shown on multiple occasions the will to continue, she is surely either heading towards total defeat in the coming days by putting her deal in front of MPs to be rejected, or from a back-bench rebellion of Tory MPs, dozens of whom have already reportedly signed ‘no-confidence’ letters in her Premiership over.
Whilst the government in-fighting lingers on, the Labour Party in Stevenage will continue to build on our plans to lead our town and country out of the mess that 8 years of Conservative governance has left us in. Our aims in office are to end food-bank Britain, raise the minimum wage to at least £10 per hour, place caps on unfair home rental costs, and embark on the most invigorating investment programme that our country has ever seen – focusing on infrastructure, technology and training, but also taking back control over large swathes of our industries which have been decimated by privatisation. We will make sure that no one, and no community is left behind.
Jill Borcherds, our Labour Parliamentary Candidate made the following announcement: “The Tories are dismantling the state education system, they’ve ruined our health service, and more people than ever are working in insecure contracts, in low-paid work, using food-banks, and living on our streets. We cannot go on like this any longer. The Tories have shown that they are fundamentally unable to negotiate a good Brexit deal; they will cannot ensure that our working, living, food, and environmental standards will not be worsened as a result of our departure from the EU, and are now relinquishing their support for their own leader. The people of our country deserve better than the shambolic state of affairs that we’ve been presented with. We are ready and waiting to step in to government – as early as possible – and give this country the transformative, progressive change we all need.”
Stevenage Labour Party will be out in force this weekend – taking our message of hope to the people of our constituency. If you want to get involved to help elect the next Labour Government and a Labour MP in Stevenage, please get in touch with us on our contact page to help out.
