The next Stevenage Borough Council meeting will see Labour propose a special motion condemning the racist abuse of the England Football team after the Euro 2020 Final.
The special motion proposed by Cllr Richard Henry, congratulates the team on their performances and conduct during Euro 2020 whilst condemning the abuse posted on social media.
Stevenage Labour Group Leader, Sharon Taylor said:
“We hope this important motion will achieve all party support. Right minded people across the country have been thrilled and delighted by the football that Gareth Southgate and his marvellous young team have produced over Euro 2020.
There is no place in our society for racism and abuse of anyone because of the colour of their skin. To have directed it at Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho was beyond disgusting and despicable. However obvious this may seem it needs to be publicly acknowledged. We have a duty and responsibility to spell out how we feel on behalf of the people of Stevenage.”
The full text of the motion is below:
“This Council wishes to express its grateful thanks and best wishes to the England Football Team, their manager Gareth Southgate and his staff for their performances in the recent Euro 2020 Football Tournament; and commends them for their conduct throughout.
They have lifted our spirits, and inspired and unified our country and communities;
This Council utterly condemns the abuse posted on social media in the aftermath of the Euro 2020 Final, which was directed at some of the England Team members.”
