Labour and Cooperative candidate for Symond's Green
I have been a Councillor at Stevenage Borough Council for the last 4 years representing the Chells ward. Although the recent pandemic has meant that planned surgeries have not taken place I have been available to take forward people’s issues both individually and collectively.
I have held special responsibility on the Executive for Community Safety and Equalities. This role includes examining the reasons for crime and disorder in the town, how we can tackle these issues by working with other agencies in particular the Police. During the pandemic I have been regularly attending virtual meetings with the Police and Crime Commissioner and Senior Police Officers in order to understand their approach to policing during these difficult times and that they understand the concern of the community.
I attended a street stall with local Police and Council Officers at the Glebe in order to give out free face masks but to also ask people what they considered where the local priorities for Policing in the Chells area. A lot of people consider that Chells is a very pleasant and safe place to live and work but there were also concerns about anti-social behaviour and I am working with local Neighbourhood wardens and the Police to tackle these issues.
I am very passionate at ensuring that all people have equal access to services in order that they can achieve their greatest potential. I try to challenge discrimination in all its forms. As a result of this year’s Black Lives Campaign I am working with Council Officers to set up an Equalities Commission to look at the experience of black people living in the community and what various agencies can do to tackle these issues.
I am working hard in the Chells ward to ensure that the concerns and issues about the area are raised at the highest levels in the Council and with other agencies.
