|At an Extraordinary Meeting of Stevenage Borough Council on the 12th of June a comprehensive Motion was proposed on behalf of the Labour Group by John Gardner and seconded by Sarah-Jane McDonough declaring a Climate Change Emergency in Stevenage. The public gallery was full our Mayor ensured they were able to fully participate in the debate.
Following the whole hearted approval of the Declaration by the Council, John said:
“ The whole Council Chamber had a real buzz this evening with a full public gallery and members eager to think Global and act local. The actions of Extinction Rebellion and the recent school strikes have awakened us all to the urgency of the need to tackle carbon emissions and slow down temperature rises to no more than 1.5 to 2 deg C by the end of the century. This really require us and other countries to reduce net carbon emissions to Zero by 2030.
Our future actions to achieve the require reduction in carbon emissions will include looking at many areas, transport, quality of all new buildings. Reducing use of gas for domestic and commercial heating. Healthy eating with the aim of reducing meat eating and climate change education in our schools. Implementing actions in these areas demands central government action and support for the growth of a strong Green Industrial Sector. Climate Justice must underline all our choices on the solutions we choose.”
