Today, Jill Borcherds, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate personally met with the Shadow Secretary of State for Leaving the EU, Keir Starmer, to discuss our constituency’s priorities as Britain negotiates departure from the European Union.
During a meeting in which Jill was able to lobby Keir Starmer over prioritising jobs and research funding, she emphasised the urgency for Stevenage that our workers are provided with long-term security and assurances. Specifically, Jill referenced her worries about a chaotic Tory Brexit which is putting jobs, safety and environmental standards at risk.
Jill Borcherds said: “I am delighted that this conference has underlined the Labour Party’s unity over its negotiating strategy as Britain prepares to leave the EU. The Tory government has wasted the past 18 months, having made clear that they are not committed to protecting our jobs, rights and economy. The Tories are incapable of delivering a deal that Stevenage people desperately need. Labour are prepared to keep all options open to ensure our rights and economy are not irreversibly damaged.”
Following an overwhelming vote at Labour’s annual Conference to affirm the party’s Brexit strategy, the Labour Party are now committed to fighting for an immediate general election to stop the recklessness that has been the hallmark of Theresa May’s approach so far. When Theresa May’s “Chequers’ Deal” goes before Parliament in the next few weeks, Labour are prepared to vote this down if this does not meet our strict tests to ensure our living standards, jobs, rights and economy are protected.
Jill also commented: “Our Tory MP Stephen McPartland’s absence in standing up for local people has been clear for all to see. For the Tories, rhetoric has been more important than delivery. We need a Labour MP to stand up for all our local people, and a Labour Government to deliver the change our country needs. We have a credible and costed plan to transform our economy and society, ‘Rebuilding Britain For the Many, Not the Few’.”
